Site description
The study site is situated in the Austrian Central Alps above the village Neustift in the Stubai Valley southwest of Innsbruck (Austria). The meadow is located close to the ‘Kaserstattalm’ on a E-SE exposed slope with an inclination of 5-20°. The average annual air temperature is 3.0 °C and the annual precipitation 1097 mm, snow cover duration is approximately 100 days.
Landuse
The meadow is fertilised with manure ca. every two years in springtime, cut in late July and lightly grazed in the beginning of September.
Soil
Dystric cambisol
- organic matter 12.61 %
- particle density 2.83 g/cm³
- pH 5.4
- bulk density 0.91 g/cm³
- pore volume 0.68
(average values for measurements at 5, 10, and 20 cm)
Measurements
Microclimate air and soil
Measured with permanent microclimate station (continuous/ half hourly; general site characterization, representative for control plots)
- Sunshine duration
- PAR total und diffuse (2 m)
- PAR incident on soil surface
- Air temperature and humidity (2 m)
- Wind speed and direction (2 m)
- Precipitation (2 m)
- Net radiation (2 m)
- CO2-Concentration at soil surface
- Soil temperature (3 depths)
- Soil water content (3 depths)
- Soil water potential (3 depths)
- Soil-CO2-Concentration (3 depths)
- Soil heat flux (3 depths)
Measured with two additional microclimate stations (continuous/ half hourly) in 2 rain exclusion treatment and 2 adjacent control plots:
- Air temperature and humidity (2 m)
- Soil temperature (3 depths)
- Soil water content (3 depths)
- Soil water potential (3 depths)
- Soil-CO2-Concentration (3 depths)
Ecosystem C fluxes
- Soil CO2 efflux plus soil temperature and moisture (continuous, 10 chambers, 6 in rain exclusion treatment, 4 in control treatments)
- Soil CO2 efflux plus soil temperature and moisture (episodic - manual, 7 collars in rain exclusion treatment, 7 in control treatment)
- Net Ecosystem Exchange of CO2 (episodic - manual, 5 collars in rain exclusion treatment, 5 in control treatment
- Leaf Photosynthesis, respiration and stomatal conductance of dominant species (episodic)
- In 2010: δ13C of ecosystem CO2 fluxes in control and treatment (tracer experiment)
Canopy parameters
- canopy height
- aboveground biomass (seasonal)
- leaf area index
- specific leaf area
Treatments within CARBO-Extreme
- 7 rain exclusion plots were established in July 2008 (2 plots of 3.5 x 6 m) and May 2009 (5 additional plots of 3 x 3.5m)
- the rain exclusion treatment (rainshelters covered with transparent plastic foils) lasted 4 weeks (early July-early August) in 2008 and 8 weeks (late May-late July) in 2009.
